Il volume esamina, per la prima volta, i simulacri lignei del Settecento custoditi nelle chiese, nei Musei Diocesani e nelle collezioni private dell’Isola. Sono opere che, a grandezza naturale e di forte impatto emotivo, furono commissionate da prelati, confraternite, devoti e nobili. Le sculture, alcune restaurate altre in cattivo stato di conservazione, sono state approntate, secondo la pertinente temperie culturale, da artisti siciliani e napoletani, talora su prototipi di manufatti presenti a Roma. In this paper we describe scientific investigations on the artwork ‘Crucified and deposed Christ’ from the Diocesan Museum of Palermo. In this study the Madonna del Soccorsoo della Mazza wooden sculpture has been analysed by an interdisciplinary and integrated approach. The polychrome sculpture, dating back to the 18thcentury, comes from the church of the Madonna del Soccorso or della Mazza (1604) situated in Via Maqueda, in Palermo and it was placed on the main recess of the altar. All steps of the conservation project, from the preliminary study to the choice of materials and the restoration procedures have been accompanied and supported by diagnostic and scientific analysis. After the patrimonial destruction that took place during the Civil War of 1936-1939 in the city of Cartagena, religious art and especially sacred sculpture, is greatly affected. The artistic expressions that the Passionist entities took to the streets on the days of Holy Week, disappear almost in their entirety, having to start a tremendously costly reconstruction process in order to alleviate the losses suffered. This article establishes the analysis of Picasso´s drawing in Cannes, in 1927, and their relation with the sculptures fashioned in París in 1928. The review of this drawing with a new plastic purpose and the comparison with other preceding sculptures in different materials facilitate a new reading, and explain the artist evolution in that specialty and the unpublished nature of immediate sculptures. The influence on important avant-garde and surrealist artists increases the interest in this review and the conclusions reached.
